About the course:
Marriage Preparation Courses for parishes in Greater Victoria
are led by Shirley and Alan Bailey of Holy Cross Parish, Dave and June
Tarry of Our Lady of the Rosary, Steven and Simona Bailey of St Andrews
Cathedral and Dale and Claudia Winhold of St Patrick’s Parish.
The marriage preparation course takes place over a weekend.
The format is somewhat similar to Engaged Encounter, the main
difference being that the couples return to their homes at night.
The emphasis of the weekend is on communication between the
engaged man and woman, who spend Saturday and Sunday together. They
will be away from distractions so that they can concentrate on talking
deeply with each other. The Marriage Preparation Weekend is not an
exercise in Group Therapy, nor is it a Group Sensitivity session.
Rather, it is an opportunity for the couple to examine their
relationship with, and understanding of, each other, their families,
the community and God.
The Marriage Preparation Weekend is designed to give couples
the opportunity to fully develop their understanding of each other.

The format for each session consists of a short talk given by
a married couple, followed by a video film. After the talk and video,
each person dialogues and exchanges the answers to question sheets with
his or her partner, the emphasis is on couple rather than group
sharing. The question sheets are designed to ensure that they have
fully shared their personal vision of marriage. The content is based on
a wide variety of sources including “Your Marriage” produced by
Redemptorist Pastoral Communications, the BC Council for Families and
the University of Minnesota. Subjects include communication and problem
solving skills, attitudes learned from childhood experience, sexuality
and spirituality.
All courses take place at Holy Cross Catholic Parish in the
Parish Centre.
